Taken from a news release by Leslie Lillien Levy
December 7, 2002
Eight thousand Dollars in cash and merchandise awards were bestowed on the artists of an exhibition of their pastel paintings in the Converse Art Gallery of the Slater Memorial Museum, located on the campus of the Norwich Free Academy, Norwich, CT, during the show's opening November 29. Sponsored by the Connecticut Pastel Society, the ninth annual "Renaissance in Pastels," the nationally juried show, will be open to the public now through February 9, 2003. Museum hours: Tuesday - Friday, 9 AM - 4 PM and weekends 1 - 4 PM.
Taking top honors was West Orange, NJ painter Rhoda Yanow, who received Best in Show, a $1,000 cash award from the Cobblestone Art Group for her painting called "Unguarded Moment," a portrayal of a man reclining on a park bench. Holyoke, MA artist Paul Leveille received a Jack Richeson Easel Award, valued at $1,200, for his portrait entitled "Summer Hat." Rainie Crawford of New Milford, CT won the Diane Bernhard Award of $750 in cash for her still life called "Tuck comb Doll with Vase." Frank Federico of Goshen, CT received $500 for the Jack Richeson Purchase Award for his painting called "Sintra." Diana DeSantis of East Williston, NY won the CPS Honor Award, a $500 cash prize, for her pastel entitled "New York, NY." In all, 36 artists received awards.
Awards were determined by a jury comprised of Rae Smith, vice president of the Pastel Society of America, and Gary Erbe, president of Allied Artists of America. A Jury of Selection, composed of five Signature members from the Connecticut Pastel Society, juried in 139 paintings for the show from a field of 300. Entrants submitted up to three slides of pastel paintings.

The Slater Museum is one of two fine arts museums in the United States on the campus of a secondary school. Its role for the furtherance of teaching the humanities is nearly unlimited. Over the past 100 years the museum has grown through generous gifts and personal bequests. The collection now includes American art and furniture from 17th through the 20th centuries, American Indian artifacts, the Vanderpoel Collection of Oriental art, Africa and European art and textiles.
