Foster Caddell in his studio

Foster Caddell began working in pastel in the 1950s when it was still a much neglected medium, since then he has helped raise the profile of the medium and was inducted as a Master Pastelist into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame in 1998.

As a child Foster developed a strong interest in drawing and has been fortunate to have been involved in art his entire life. At seventeen he joined the art department of a lithograph company. He was drafted in World War II where he did poster and propaganda work, then returned to the lithography company, after the war. At the age of 30 he decided to try freelancing and did many illustrations for school and religious books.

Eventually, he was asked to teach, at first in his hometown. His classes started with just four students and grew over the years to the largest privately owned school in New England. Consequently, many articles were written about him and he himself has written four instructional books. He continues to teach classes part time at his Connecticut school , and workshops, on a selective basis, in this country and abroad.

Foster is a very versatile artist. He is as adept at landscapes and still life as he is portraiture and has painted many portraits of many prominent business and government figures.
