Finished Pastel by Liz Haywood-Sullivan

For those of you who were not able to attend Liz Haywood-Sullivan’s pastel landscape demo at the CT Pastel Society on Saturday, April 2, 2005, you missed a wonderful exhibition of experience, skill, talent and sharing of information. I will attempt to share what I learned at the demonstration.

Liz has a framer dry mount Wallis sanded paper to gator board. This way she is able to frame the finished painting without the need for mat boards. She merely uses a spacer between her work and the glass. She plans out her paintings before hand so that she can cut her Wallis mounted gator board support to the correct size. Gator board needs to be cut with a saw and it is likely that you would damage your finished piece if you attempted to saw it after you finished your painting.

To begin, she lightly sketches in her composition in a light pastel. Next she applies soft pastels in broad strokes to cover most of the painting. Here comes the fun part. She uses plain old 99¢ rubbing alcohol which she applies with a brush over the initial pastel lay-in. Once this is accomplished, she lets it dry, which takes about five minutes.

Next, she goes back in with her pastels alternating among the various sets she owns. She especially likes to use Girault Pastels, which are softer than NuPastels, but harder than her usual pastels (Terry Ludwig, Diane Townsend, Unison, etc.). She employs the Girault as a blender of sorts.

If you refer to the photos, you can see the demonstration as her painting progresses.
