* After the Concert in Budapest
After receiving a BFA in Painting from Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT, Chris took a 35 year hiatus to work in advertising, illustration and finally, to own and operate her own agency in Meriden, CT.

..

Like most artists who long to return to what they truly love, Chris has made a commitment to slowly phase out the advertising and work strictly with her art. Consequently, she works two jobs as she and her husband David have the last of four daughters to get through college. After that, she hopes to paint full time.

Since she started painting a few years ago she has become immersed in pastels.
“I took an adult pastel class taught by Ellie Bender at my local high school just to try to get back into painting. My kids had bought me an entire set of oils and watercolors along with canvases, easels, etc. just to get me back to my roots. It all sat there for two years. I took the little night course to force myself back. Because of this once a weeknight course I became addicted to the pigments and brilliance of the pastel medium. I was off and running”, Chris says.

Having started on the path back to what she loved, Chris started going to workshops in both oil and pastel. Some of them include: Oil Portrait Ateliers/Margaret Carter Baumgartner; Plein Air Pastel Workshop/Doug Dawson; Pastel Landscape with Frank Federico; and Plein Air Pastel Workshop/Allan Flattmann. She plans to work with Susan Ogilvie and Peggy Baumgartner again this year.

Chris’ work follows two major paths right now… Night landscapes and portraiture. “I am fascinated with the mystique of night landscapes. I love painting the contrast of night lights yet challenged by the subtleties that are barely seen in the shadows. The pastels are just exceptional for these paintings… I think I own every dark pastel known to man at this point.”

Her other passion is capturing the personalities of people in pastel and oil portraiture. She paints mostly life-size and likes to tell stories about the people she paints. “I just finished a 30” x 40” portrait of a young woman who loves to party at sophisticated nightclubs. She posed with her favorite martini glass and is looking over her shoulder as if to say ‘Are you talking to me?’ As a matter of fact, that’s what I named the painting.”

“I’ve feel fortunate that I was given a second chance in life to do what I love. I’ve met others like myself who are advertising refugees. We all burn out from the business. I think we all find a peace in painting and that is why a lot of us eventually gravitate back to our roots. I love every minute of it! I have met so many wonderful people since I ventured back.”

Chris lives with her husband David in Meriden, CT. They have raised four beautiful daughters. “They are my greatest achievements in life”, she says.
